The Peer Health Initiative empowers Hummingbird Place  residents with lived experience to take an active role in supporting one another through harm reduction, daily site maintenance, and peer mentorship.

Proceeds from our June Raffle supported the Sooke Shelter Society’s Peer Health Initiative.

Toxic drugs are killing more and more people in our region, shattering lives, families, and communities. Since BC's public health officer declared a public health emergency in 2016 the number of unregulated drug poisonings in Sooke and Metchosin has doubled. Forty-three of our neighbours needed assistance from paramedics in the last year alone. Our next 50/50 raffle is dedicated to supporting Sooke Shelter society's essential programs to help those struggling with addiction.

The Peer Health Initiative empowers Humminbird Place residents with lived experience to take an active role in supporting one another through harm reduction, daily site maintenance, and peer mentorship. This initiative promotes dignity, responsibility, and connection by offering honorariums for meaningful contributions, while also helping foster a safer, healthier, and more inclusive community. Our goal is knowledge sharing and offering support and education to participants who are interested in topics such as healthy hobbies, overdose prevention/safer substance use, mind and body wellness, health promotion, accessing resources, and more.

CHALLENGE

Over the years, the needs of residents entering Ayre Manor have changed, with most now being over 80 years old. Many are less mobile, cognitively compromised, and require wheelchairs to stay active and involved in their community.

Mobility is vital — it helps residents enjoy activities, improves circulation, supports digestion, prevents pressure sores, and promotes better breathing and posture while eating.

Some residents need specialized wheelchairs that tilt, recline, and provide lateral support to help them sit upright. As people age, they lose muscle strength, making it difficult to sit straight, which can cause leaning or even falls. These high-quality wheelchairs will provide comfort, safety, and dignity — improving the quality of life for our residents.

SOLUTION

We would like to purchase a Synthesis Positioning Chair to improve the comfort, safety, and well-being of their residents. This chair provides extra cushioning and large lateral supports to prevent residents from falling sideways, especially for those with limited muscle strength. Its tilting and positioning features help redistribute pressure, reducing the risk of painful injuries.

Unlike other chairs that need to be replaced based on weight changes, the Synthesis Chair is adjustable to accommodate all heights and weights, making it a long-term solution for our residents. Its lightweight design makes it easier to maneuver, helping to prevent injuries for both residents and staff — especially when assisting heavier residents. This chair will make a significant difference in enhancing comfort, dignity, and quality of life at Ayre Manor.

About the Synthesis Positioning Wheelchair

Residents will enjoy the fullest range of tilt and recline in the progressive design of the Synthesis Positioning Wheelchair. This manual tilt-in space wheelchair is infinitely adjustable and includes the sought after Trendelenburg Positioning feature. The Synthesis features their signature Comfort Tension Seating® system, which provides comfort that lasts all day. The positioning capabilities help further redistribute pressure to prevent painful and costly pressure injuries.

This wheelchair is perfect for long-term care and many other care settings.

The Sooke Family Resource Society

Prenatal Education and Outreach Program

The SFRS Prenatal Education and Outreach Program provides pregnancy education, support, and outreach to our community for the ever-growing local family population. Our Prenatal Program offers the prenatal needs of expecting families in our community with locally accessible group prenatal classes with a low/sliding scale fee and free individual outreach support.

The prenatal classes and outreach services, as well as the social connections developed in the Prenatal Program, will provide families the opportunity to gain perinatal and postnatal education, increase awareness of community resources, and build a shared sense of community identity. This program supports outreach clients in need with prenatal and postnatal supplies and equipment such as cribs, car seats, baby bedding, baby and mom hygiene products, nutritional support, and prenatal vitamins.

This program works collaboratively with both Sooke Midwifery and Public Health supporting clients from those services that have identified need for this Sooke Family Resource Society support. The service can be accessed by referral from a service provider or through self-referral by an individual.

As the Sooke community is growing with young families, we have seen an increase in the need for this service. This critical family support is available in the Sooke community through this SFRS Prenatal Program and is the only social service, locally available, prenatal education and outreach program in the greater Sooke area.

What your donations supported:

  • $35.00 provides a box of diapers for a program participant
  • $50.00 provides a container of infant nutritional formula for a program participant
  • $150.00-$400.00 provides a car seat for a family that needs this to leave the hospital with their baby.
  • $500.00 provides 25, $20.00 food vouchers to support program participants nutritional needs.
  • $1000.00 provides 30 bottles of prenatal vitamins, specialized iron supplements, and/or omegas needed by pregnant program participants.

My husband and I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to SFRS and the Prenatal Education and Outreach team for these invaluable services to us as young parents and newcomers to Canada.”

The prenatal classes were fantastic. We learned so much and have good information to start our journey. We felt extremely supported and know we can access the outreach support if we have any questions or concerns when our baby arrives.

The prenatal program really supported me with my anxiety about being a new mom and with supplies for my baby. It is great that I am now able to attend the playgroups at SFRS with my baby and meet other families.
